The Theory of Relativity

May 9 - 12, 2024

Preas Theatre

This moving and unconventional song cycle bursts with originality as it examines the interconnectedness of us all through life's shared experiences - from the hilarious to the heartbreaking. From Drama Desk Award nominees Neil Bartram and Brian Hill (The Story of My Life), The Theory of Relativity is a joyous and moving look about our surprisingly interconnected lives.  Whether you're allergic to cats, in love for the first or tenth time, a child of divorce, a germaphobe or simply a unique individual, audience members and actors alike are sure to find themselves in this fresh new musical.

Preas Theatre

When a group of teenagers’ bullying of another student goes too far, they are left with an unplanned death [Adam] on their conscience. The mixed up group panic and decide to cover up their involvement in Adam's death. However, when they realize their deception has worked and actually brings peace to their confused lives, how do they move forwards? The teenagers split into two camps when they realize that their actions have framed an innocent man for their crime. But is this enough of an incentive to put right their wrong? And what happens when the presumed dead come back to life? Dennis Kelly’s twenty-first century play for young people calls society’s response to cruelty, bullying, peer pressure and pack mentality into question. Are these behaviors societal and learned, or are they inherent in us all?

When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys' expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what's right.

Did you know that the Austin school district gives sports and band programs between $120 to $150 per student versus $40 per student to the theater program?

We depend on the generosity of our parents and community to help the AHS theater department thrive.

Your contribution will help us put on professional-level productions, send our students to theatre state competitions and workshops, and help with improvements to the theater.

Please sponsor our 2021-22 season with a generous donation. Many options are available.  Thank you!
